A unique feature of the recently refurbished Westfield Carindale shopping centre in Brisbane is the ‘egg’ seat-planters manufactured by Quatro Design.
The 16 GRC seat- planters were designed by Westfield’s Design and Construction division based in Sydney, and were custom-made for the project. The elliptical shape resembles an egg cut in half longitudinally. The dimensions are 3 metres x 2.2 metres.
Twelve of the seat- planters have GRC tops while four have timber tops. The planter recess is offset from the centre providing a wide seat area.
Manufacture of the seat-planters entailed the fabrication of a precision two-part mould. The double-curvature form was shaped using a CAD-driven 5-axis router, accurate to a fraction of a millimetre.
